Victor’s Superpowers

A hobbyist sets out to build a studio and accidentally earns a semester of sound engineering in a single evening — from minus fifty LUFS to a passing grade.

Now I better understood where some of my friend Victor’s superpowers lay.

I have a homie who was, hands down, one of the best sound engineers in the game. When he first told me what he did for a living, I nodded like I got it. I didn’t. I had no clue of the intricacies, the details, or the sheer importance of the work. To me, sound was something that either came out of the speakers or it didn’t. You talk, the mic catches it, the people hear it.

What else was there to it.

Right?

Everything, it turns out. There was everything else.

I found this out the hard way, building my own recording studio this weekend. I sat down with an AI assistant to get a direct-to-camera setup running for a new teaching program I’m launching, figuring it would be an afternoon of plugging things in. Instead I got a crash course in a discipline I didn’t know had this much depth. We didn’t stop at “is it recording.” We measured. And the first thing we measured was humbling.

My very first test came back at something called minus fifty LUFS. I learned that LUFS is how loud audio actually is to human ears, and that broadcast material is supposed to live around minus sixteen. I was more than thirty decibels too quiet. My voice was a whisper buried in a recording that was mostly nothing. And that was just the opening problem.

Then it got detailed. Real detailed.

I learned that my microphone, a large-diaphragm condenser, was basically deaf without something called phantom power — forty-eight volts it needs just to wake up. I learned there was a pad switch on the mic body quietly throwing away ten decibels of my voice, and a high-pass filter I should have had engaged the whole time. I learned that a button on my interface labeled Hi-Z was for plugging in a guitar, and had no business being anywhere near a vocal mic.

I learned about the noise floor — the quiet hiss and hum a room is always making underneath you — and why your voice has to sit at least twenty-five decibels above it or the whole thing sounds like a hostage tape. I learned about rumble, the sub-forty-five-hertz garbage a mic picks up when it’s touching a desk, energy so low you can’t even hear it but it eats your entire recording alive. The fix was a shock mount and getting the mic off the desk and onto a floor stand.

I learned what a crest factor is, and how to read a recording’s peaks against its average to tell the difference between me talking loud and a stray thump knocking the stand. I learned why a limiter sits at the end of the chain like a bouncer, catching anything that tries to spike past the ceiling. I learned about a compressor riding the level, a low cut cleaning the bottom end, and the exact gain staging order you set them in so each one hands clean signal to the next.

I learned that a dead channel — audio in one ear and silence in the other — comes from a mic in one input of a two-input box, and that the cure is a single setting called mono that sums it back to whole. I learned that my sample rate had to match at forty-eight kilohertz end to end, or the software would just refuse to listen.

And I learned to hunt. When a recording came back with a strange, flat, constant wash of noise under every word, we didn’t guess — we looked at the shape of it over time, saw that it never dipped the way a real voice does, and figured out it was a machine running in the room. It was my hard drive, spinning hard inside a bag, and my microphone was good enough to hear it through the fabric. That is the level of detail we’re talking about. That is what Victor has been doing, effortlessly, for years.

By the end of the session my numbers had gone from that opening minus fifty all the way up to a clean, mono, properly-gained recording sitting exactly where it should — thirty decibels of headroom between my voice and the silence, no clipping, no rumble, no dead channel. A passing grade on a test I hadn’t even known existed that morning.

Here’s the part that stays with me. I am not a sound engineer. I’m a guy with a program to record and the will to figure it out. And with the right tools and the right partner in the room, I got the equivalent of a semester of audio engineering in a single evening — not the theory, the doing. That’s the world we’re in now. Anyone with the desire to learn to do a thing genuinely has the tools, today, to actually go and do it. The gate is gone. All that’s left is whether you want it.

Which brings me to Victor.

Because now that I know what all these words mean, I also know exactly how much I don’t know — and how far ahead of me he still is. So if you’re reading this, my friend: I’ve got a studio now, I’ve got the vocabulary, and I’ve got a suspicious amount of confidence for a man who learned what a noise floor was last Tuesday.
